Accompany us for a visit to Mount Vernon, the beloved home of George and Martha Washington.  We travel by coach to Washington, D.C. where we board the “Spirit of Washington II” and sail to Mount Vernon.  This boat has a luxurious, climate-controlled interior deck and outdoor café seating.  Take a casual walk around the beautiful strolling decks or remain inside and enjoy a panoramic view through the oversized windows.  There is a fully-stocked snack bar on board where you can enjoy an early morning continental breakfast (on your own).  While sailing on the Potomac River en route to Mount Vernon, we pass several historic and National sites.  Casual attire is appropriate for the cruise.  (Because the boat is fully enclosed, it will sail rain or shine!)

Upon arrival at Mount Vernon, take time to explore the George Washington:  Pioneer Farmer site, a four-acre working farm that includes a recreation of Washington’s 16-sided treading barn.  Stop at the tombs of George and Martha Washington as you walk to lunch (included) at the Mount Vernon Inn Restaurant that is located adjacent to the Washington Estate.  Following lunch, return to the Mount Vernon Estate and enjoy a self-guided tour of the Mansion, gardens and grounds.  On the grounds of the estate, you will find the Slave Memorial, the slave quarters, kitchen, stables, greenhouse, lush gardens, the Ford Orientation Center and the Donald W. Reynolds Museum and Education Center. Forty-five acres of the estate are open to the public.

For this trip walking shoes and comfortable clothing are recommended. The visit to Mount Vernon is very much an outdoor experience, so prepare for weather conditions.  Be prepared to wait in line (usually less than 20 – 30 minutes) to enter the Mansion.

THIS TRIP REQUIRES MUCH WALKING AND IS AN OUTDOOR EXPERIENCE.

Visitors are asked to observe the following policies while at the Mount Vernon Estate:

  • Photography is encouraged everywhere on the estate, but is not allowed in the Mansion.
  • No food or beverage, except bottled water, is allowed on the estate.
  • No gum is allowed in the Mansion.
  • Do not pick or take flowers or other plant materials from the estate.
  • Do not feed the animals.

Coach leaves Mount Vernon at 4:30 P.M. for the trip home.  The coach will arrive in York at approximately 6:45 P.M. and in Hanover at 7:30 P.M.
