Visit the most interactive museum in Washington, D.C. -- The Newseum, a 250,000 square-foot museum of news offering visitors an experience that blends five centuries of news history with up to the second technology and hands-on-exhibits. The Newseum was built at a cost of $450 million, and opened to the public on April 11, 2008. The Newseum is located at the intersection of Pennsylvania Avenue and Sixth Street, NW, between the White House and the U.S. Capitol, and is near the Smithsonian Museums on the National Mall.
The Newseum features seven levels of galleries, theaters, retail spaces and visitor services. It offers a unique environment that takes you behind the scenes to experience how and why news is made. The exterior’s unique architectural features include a 74-foot-high marble engraving of the First Amendment. There is an immense front wall of glass through which passers-by can watch the museum fulfill its mission of providing a forum where “the media and the public can gain a better understanding of each other” with free press in a democratic society. There is no food stop en route to Washington. Lunch is on your own and may be obtained at the food court or restaurant at the Newseum. Dinner (included) is at the Old Country Buffet in Catonsville, MD en route home.
