Enjoy the scenery as you travel to Norfolk with breakfast and lunch on your own. After lunch visit the Hampton History Museum where the roots of this museum extend back some five decades. Ten galleries share the beginning of the Virginia Colony and the evolution of Tidewater Virginia life. Experience the burning of Hampton during the Civil War and see how the Contraband Decision was the first step toward freedom for millions of African Americans. Then it’s on to visit the Norfolk Botanical Garden. Enjoy the 155-acre garden intertwined by bridges, coastal waterways and 12 miles of trails with a guided tour aboard a tram. The gardens brilliantly feature some of the East Coast’s largest collections of azaleas, camellias, roses and rhododendrons. Board the coach and travel to the hotel where you check-in for a 2-night stay. Norfolk is an area rich in our nation’s history . . . with a number of notable landmarks and sites preserving the past for present generations to enjoy. Depart for dinner (included).
Today, after breakfast (included) at the hotel, start out for a guided tour of the world’s largest naval installation, Naval Station Norfolk, home port to more than 100 ships of the Atlantic fleet. Travel past giant aircraft carriers, destroyers and submarines as well as historic homes. Next, visit the Battleship Wisconsin, one of the largest and last battleships ever built by the United States Navy. This vessel was used in World War II, the Korean War and Desert Storm. Enjoy lunch (on your own). Visit Nauticus, a premier maritime science museum located on Norfolk’s waterfront. This museum is a fun and exciting interactive science and technology center that explores the power of the sea. See the NEW and permanent exhibit, The Jamestown Exposition and Launching of the Steel Navy, developed and produced by Hampton Roads Naval Museum in conjunction with Nauticus. This exhibit examines the period from 1880, when the Navy began to recover from a post-civil war decline to 1907, when President Theodore Roosevelt sent the Great White Fleet around the world as an affirmation of American Naval strength. Enjoy a 2-hr. narrated cruise aboard the “Victory Rover.” The “Victory Rover” cruises from the Nauticus on the smooth waters of the Elizabeth River and Hampton Roads Harbor. The “Victory Rover” has comfortable seating, an air-conditioned enclosed deck, an open-air deck, restrooms, snack bar and souvenir shop. Have dinner (on your own) this evening on Granby Street. Here you find many restaurants and shops for your enjoyment. Later, board the coach and return to the hotel.
Following breakfast (included) at the hotel, visit the MacArthur Memorial and discover the life and career of a five-star General of the Army, Douglas MacArthur. Located in Norfolk’s restored 1850’s City Hall, the complex features General and Mrs. MacArthur’s crypts, a museum, theater and nine special exhibit galleries that portray the career of one of America’s best known military heroes. Board the coach and travel for lunch (on your own) at the MacArthur Center. The Center has a variety of restaurants and a food court. Leave, this afternoon, for home with fond memories of Norfolk. There will be a fast food stop (on your own) en route home.
The coach returns to York at approximately 8:30 P.M. and to Hanover at approximately 9:15 P.M.
