The Statue of Liberty National Monument is located on Liberty Island in Upper New York Bay. France presented the statue to the United States in 1884. It commemorates the alliance between the U.S. and France during the American Revolution.

Ellis Island, located near the Statue of Liberty in New York Harbor, was this country’s main point of entry for immigrants between 1892 and 1924. Displayed here are exhibits that chronicle the history of the processing station and the island. In addition, the Immigration Library, Oral History Studio and the American Immigrant Wall of Honor are located here.

The coach takes you to Liberty State Park, New Jersey where you board the ferry to go to the Statue of Liberty and/or Ellis Island. Security screening will occur prior to boarding the ferry. No large bags or packages, nor sharp instruments, are allowed on either island. Belt buckles affect the screening equipment, so the less metal on you, the better.

The ferry stops first at Ellis Island, proceeds to Liberty Island where the Statue of Liberty is located and then returns to Liberty State Park.

NOTE: As of October 29, 2011, all spaces in and on the Statue of Liberty are temporarily restricted while upgrades are made to the 125-year old pedestal and the 200-year old fort base from which the Statue rises. The work is expected to be completed in approximately one year. During the interior renovation project Liberty Island will remain open to visitors.

The following information has been copied directly from the internet in regard to the Ferry and the Statue of Liberty.

Due to a year-long renovation project, all interiors of the Statue itself, including the museum, pedestal and crown, will be closed to the public while this work takes place.  The interior of the base of the Statue, and the historic fort that is the foundation of the Statue, are scheduled for necessary upgrades to stairwells, elevators and mechanical systems.  However, Liberty Island will remain open to visitors during the renovations, and views of Lady Liberty will remain unobstructed.  The visitor center, bookstore, gift shop and restaurant are fully open.

New security measures are now in place.  All passengers undergo airport style security screening before they board the Statue of Liberty Ferry boats, and there are restrictions on backpacks and luggage.  Visitors are advised to arrive early, leaving up to one hour for processing through the new security system.  If possible, visitors are also advised to leave backpacks and luggage at home.

Please note the following security considerations:

  • All persons and property are subject to search.  Visitors to the Park are required to undergo airport style security screening.
  • No packages, backpacks, coolers or parcels are permitted on Liberty or Ellis Islands.
  • There are no locker facilities at the New York and New Jersey embarkation points.
  • All weapons are prohibited, including:  firearms, explosives or flammables, knives, or sharp objects (including tools), pepper spray and mace.
  • Security is managed by the United States Park Police.
